Starbucks Richmond Closures Amid Company Restructuring
At least two Starbucks locations have recently closed in Richmond as part of a broader initiative by the Seattle-based coffee giant to reduce its store count and restructure operations nationwide.
Closed Locations
- 1017 N. Arthur Ashe Blvd. — operated for about a decade, located near Pizzeria Mungo and The Ace mixed-use building.
- 4320 Commerce Road, Southside — a newer location in a retail building near the Philip Morris plant.
The closures leave Subway as the only remaining tenant in the Commerce Road building, while the Arthur Ashe Boulevard store's closure consolidates operations near newer Starbucks locations at Scott’s Walk development.
Wider Restructuring Plans
Starbucks announced plans to close stores across North America during its 2025 fiscal year, which ended recently. Overall, the company aims to decrease the number of company-operated stores by about 1%, balancing openings and closings over the year.
By the end of FY25, Starbucks will operate nearly 18,300 locations across the United States and Canada, including both corporate-owned and licensed cafes. Additionally, the company plans to lay off 900 non-retail employees.
Local Expansion Continues
Despite the closures, Starbucks continues local expansion efforts, recently opening a new location on West Broad Street in Henrico and filing plans for another in Northside.
These strategic closures reflect Starbucks’ focus on optimizing operations while maintaining growth opportunities in key areas.
